UNCG Alumna Wins Award to Reduce Refugee Health Disparities

Dr. Huaibo Xin, UNCG 2010 (DrPH, Community Health Education), and currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Education, Health, and Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, has won the Vaughnie Lindsay New Investigator Award in support of her research efforts among Bosnian refugees in and around St. Louis, Missouri.

The Renaissance Community Cooperative (RCC) is a community-owned grocery store that will open in Northeast Greensboro, on the corner of Phillips and Sykes Avenue. The RCC will bring fresh, healthy, and affordable food to North East Greensboro, which has been identified as a food desert.

As a public health graduate student at UNCG and a brand-new yoga instructor, I find many of my passions and interests from the two arenas have collided to create a greater understanding of both subjects. In fact, public health and yoga have many of the same ‘objectives.’ Most notably is promoting and fostering the health of individuals and communities through education and practice.

Kelley Massengale, graduate researcher

Diaper Bank of North Carolina

Kelley Massengale, a UNCG PHE doctoral student, has been actively involved with the Durham-based Diaper Bank of North Carolina since January of 2014, where she volunteers weekly. The diaper bank works to provide low-income families in Durham and Orange counties with a supplemental supply of diapers by working with partner organizations in the community who distribute diapers to the families they serve.
