Community Building at “Pink in the Park” among PHE Seniors (Fall 2022)
On Thursday, September 29, 2022, the senior class of students in the Public Health Education, Community Health Education concentration, and the majority of students in HEA 312-01 Public Health and Healthcare Systems, attended the annual “Pink in the Park” Event.
“‘Pink in the Park’ is a free breast cancer awareness event held in September to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Piedmont Triad. A rallying point for the community since 2007, this inspiring event offers an opportunity to celebrate, honor and remember the lives of family members and friends who have battled breast cancer.”
Students in Professor Yongue’s HEA 312-01 class could either attend this event to observe and participate in community health education activities, or watch documentaries related to breast cancer awareness and ways to improve healthcare access.
Professor Yongue and Dr. Gringle, who both teach morning classes for CHE students on Thursdays, coordinated to allow students enough time to get all the way to the LeBauer Park in downtown Greensboro. Dr. Gringle was instrumental in encouraging this opportunity for students who were looking for ways to connect with community health organizations who may offer internships.
Interesting Experiences
- Tamiya “Miya” Riddle initiated the idea to create a T-shirt in honor of this special event, and being a member of the class of 2023. She and LeVern Allison, created unique T-shirts, and wore them to this event.
- Three students won valuable door prizes!
- Two students, along with Professor Yongue, got a tour of the Mobile Mammography Unit, which is an effort by Cone Health to increase healthcare screening access.
- A former UNCG Homecoming Queen, who is also a breast cancer survivor, Ms. Vickie Whitt, greeted students at the Sisters Network Table
