Dr. Donna Biederman, a 2012 DrPH graduate

Dr. Donna Biederman, a 2012 DrPH graduate and current Assistant Professor at Duke University, has received one of two national $600,000 Hillman Innovations in Care Award.

The goal of the Hillman Innovations in Care Program is to advance leading edge, nursing-driven models of care that improve the health and health care of vulnerable populations, including the economically disadvantaged, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBQT, the homeless, rural populations, and other groups that encounter barriers to accessing healthcare services.

Biederman and her colleagues developed the Durham Medical Respite Program, a nurse-led, community based initiative that provides safe and supportive respite housing to homeless persons who require a place for healing that is safer than the street or shelters following discharge from a hospital, behavioral health, or jail setting. The work that Dr. Biederman and her colleagues are doing truly embodies the vision of the Hillman Innovations.

Dr. Biederman, named the Outstanding Doctoral Student at UNCG in 2012, continues to bring honor to the university by being named 2013 Outstanding Clinical Instructor in the Duke School of Nursing and the 2015 Outstanding Contributions to Community/Public Health Nursing Research Award by the Association of Community Health Nurse Educators. Congratulations to Dr. Biederman!
