Mission:

Our club’s mission is to provide a community for aspiring healthcare professionals through meetings, community service, and networking. We aim to create a sense of unity, enabling members to see themselves in others. This is especially important on our large campus, where it’s easy to feel lost. With this group, we can inspire and support each other, helping those unsure about their path find their way, in line with the university’s goal of “Find your way.”

Who We Are

Melanin in Medicine (MIM) is a student-led organization that empowers underrepresented students who are interested in healthcare careers. Open to all majors and disciplines, MIM supports any student who sees a future in medicine, whether in public health, nursing, pre-med, pre-PA, allied health, or related fields.

Founded in 2023, MIM has grown to over 110 active members who are committed to academic excellence, leadership, and service. Our faculty advisor is Dr. Andrea Lewis in the Public Health department, who helps us stay grounded in purpose and aligned with our vision.

What We Do

MIM hosts a wide range of events and initiatives to support its members’ personal, academic, and professional development:

Why MIM Matters

Melanin in Medicine exists to fill a gap: representation, belonging, and affirmation. In a field where students of color are often underrepresented, and on a campus as large as UNCG, MIM gives students a chance to feel seen, heard, and supported.

We are more than a pre-health organization. We are a community that reflects the future of medicine: diverse, passionate, united, and deeply rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a seat at the table and a hand to hold as they find their way.
